KATE HENDERSON

Tactile abstract sculpture

Kate’s sculpture is based on a purity and simplicity of form and finish, creating sensual objects that beg to be touched.

These modern pieces are crafted using traditional skills and tools alongside some very contemporary materials and techniques. Kate takes great pleasure in casting and finishing each piece individually, which means, even with a limited edition, there will be some slight variation of colour and shape.

In some cases Kate will completely reshape a cast piece by hand carving after casting, in others multiple colours are used and inevitably these pieces are totally unique.

Kate's instinctive appreciation of shape and form, coupled with a desire to enhance and celebrate the inherent qualities of the raw material, result in effortless, tactile and desirable objects.

CARVED

“I love to work with the authenticity of whatever material I am working in, none more so than wood. Celebrating the inherent qualities whether natural or from a previous life . . . the grain, the knots or the nail holes and cut notches . . . any and all perceived imperfections are important to me and will both inform the initial direction of a piece and give it it’s final personality.”

CAST

“I enjoy exploring certain forms further by creating moulds from selected carvings and continuing the conversation through casting. Working in a wide range of materials allows me to revisit the same form in new scales, orientations, colours and levels of translucency.

Forms may be sliced, partially cast, or even carved again after casting - creating new shapes that remain rooted in the original. As with carving, the process is guided by response embracing the unexpected and celebrating the material’s voice.”
