Abstracting the Everyday: A Still Life Painting Workshop

May 22 & June 26

This one-day workshop explores how to capture everyday objects in a bold, abstracted style. Working with fruit, vases, and cut flowers, you’ll simplify forms to their essential shapes, focusing on suggestion rather than detail.

  • Experiment with expressive mark-making, dynamic colour combinations, and mixed materials to bring energy and depth to your work.

  • Use collage and mark-making to break down shapes and add spontaneity to your compositions.

  • Explore the interplay of light and shadow to create atmosphere and balance in your paintings.

  •

Through guided exercises and demonstrations, you’ll work on board with oil paint, ink, and pastel, taking inspiration from artists such as Matisse, Ivon Hitchens, and the Bloomsbury Group. The day will encourage creative freedom, helping you loosen up your approach and develop a more instinctive way of painting.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist looking for fresh inspiration, this workshop will give you new tools to explore abstraction in still life.

Exploring Circular Compositions: A Botanical Painting Workshop

June 12 & July 10

Did you ever lie in the garden as a child, looking through a cardboard tube at sunlight filtering through the leaves? This workshop draws on that sense of wonder, using circular compositions, rich colours, and negative space to explore the beauty of plants and flowers.

Through a mix of observation and abstraction, you’ll use viewfinders and phone cameras to simplify leaf shapes, experiment with shadows, and embrace flow techniques to loosen your approach.

  • Explore circular compositions and how they create balance and movement in your work.

  • Work with shadows to simplify leaf shapes and experiment with fluid painting techniques.

  • Use high-flow acrylics, inks, oils, and pastels on circular Khadi paper to develop layered, expressive pieces.

  •

Working with high-flow acrylics, inks, oils, and pastels on circular Khadi paper, you’ll create two finished pieces to take home—vibrant, expressive interpretations of nature seen through your own unique lens.
