About the Work
Part of the ongoing Soundings series, this large-scale stain painting explores depth, balance and presence through restrained bands of tone.
The composition suggests horizon and ground without resolving into landscape. A weight of grey sits above a rust-toned base, creating a quiet structural tension. The surface holds both stillness and latent movement — a sense of something measured rather than declared.
The work may be hung vertically or horizontally, subtly shifting its orientation and emphasis.
Material & Process
Working on raw canvas, watercolour, ink and hand-ground mineral pigments are poured and absorbed directly into the fibres. The staining process allows colour to bloom and settle organically, guided by gravity and restraint.
The exposed canvas remains active throughout, functioning as light and ground within the composition.
